Sand Casting

Sand Casting is a metal casting process characterised by using sand as the mold material.

Compared to pressure die cast and gravity die cast the manufacturing processes is very cost effective. A suitable bonding agent is mixed with the sand and then moistened with water to develop the strength and plasticity of the clay, in order to make the aggregate suitable for molding. The moulds have to be re-built after every casting.

Sand casting is the most widely used casting process available and over 70% of all metal castings are produced via a sand casting process.

Sand casting is used to produce a large variety of metal components with complex geometries. These parts can vary greatly in size and weight, ranging from a few grammes to several tons. Some smaller sand cast parts include components such as gears, pulleys, crankshafts, connecting rods, and propellers. Larger applications include housings for large equipment and heavy machine bases. Sand casting is also common in producing automobile components, such as engine blocks, engine manifolds, cylinder heads, and transmission cases.
